تطرقنا في الجزء الأول من هذه الحلقات الأركان السبعة الأساسية في صناعة البتروكيماويات، وسنتناول في الجزء التالي منها شركات البتروكيماويات العالمية، وأوجه استخدام وتطبيقات المنتجات البتروكيماوية والكيماوية بقدر من التفصيل.

شركات صناعة البتروكيماويات من المرجح أن تكون من أقدم شركات صناعة البتروكيماويات الرائدة  هي شركة "يونيون كاربايد" (Union Carbide)، التابعة لشركة "داو كيميكال" (Dow Chemical)، حيث قامت الشركة في العام 1920 بتطوير أسلوب رخيص التكلفة في إنتاج الإيثيلين. وتقوم شركة "يونيون كاربايد" بإنتاج الكيماويات والبوليمرات الداخلة بدورها في صناعة تغليف المنتجات الصناعية والغذائية، والأواني المنزلية، والبويات ومواد التكسية، والأدوية، والأسلاك والكوابل، ومنتجات العناية الشخصية، والسيارات، والأقمشة، والزراعة وغيرها.

ونورد فيما يلي قائمة بأسماء شركات البتروكيماويات العالمية:

أوجه استخدام وتطبيقات المنتجات البتروكيماوية والكيماوية

يمكن تصنيف صناعة البتروكيماويات، واستنادا إلى نوعية استخدامها، إلى الفئات التالية:

• الكيماويات الزراعية • المواد اللاصقة • البوهيات ومواد التكسية • الصناعات الدوائية

• مجموعة الحلول الصحية (الصابون، ومركبات التنظيف، ومواد التنظيف)

وتشمل مجموعة المواد الصناعية أعلاه سلسلة من المواد الخام والمنتجات النهائية منها المواد البلاستيكية مثل البولي فينيل كلوريد (PVC)، والبولي إيثيلين، والبولي إستايرين، والبولي بروبلين. ونود التنويه هنا أن هذه المواد تلعب دورا حيويا في سلسلة الصناعات باعتبارها ركنا أساسيا في إنتاج تشكيلة واسعة من المنتجات مثل لعب الأطفال وأجهزة التلفزيون وسماعات الإستيريو والمايكروفونات والإليكترونيات والتوصيلات وخطوط أنابيب الكهرباء والمياه وقوارير المياه والعصائر.أيضا يستفيد قطاع السيارات من فئة المنتجات البلاستيكية.

من جانب آخر، يتولى القطاع الزراعي في صناعة البتروكيماويات تزويد المزارعين ومنسقي الحدائق على مستوى العالم كل احتياجاتهم فيما يخص المخصبات والمبيدات الزراعية ومكافحة الحشرات والكيماويات الزراعية الأخرى.

 ومن القطاعات المهمة الأخرى في صناعة البتروكيماويات قطاع البوهيات ومواد التكسية والملصقات حيث يستفيد الصناع العاملون في صناعة البويات والورنيش ومزيل البويات والغراء والمواد الداخلة في قطاع الإنشاءات والنقل والنجارة من المواد الخام التي توفرها صناعة البتروكيماويات.

ولولا صناعة البتروكيماويات لغابت أدوات التنظيف الصحية مثل صابون الحمام ومكونات التنظيف الموجودة في المنازل والمكاتب والفنادق. أيضا تشمل هذه المواد تشكيلة واسعة من أدوات التجميل والحمام مثل العطورات ومرطبات الجسم ومعجون الأسنان كما أن منتجات العناية الشخصية باتت جزءا لا يتجزأ من المكونات الموجودة في كل منزل أو نشاط  تجاري على مستوى العالم.

يمكن القول، وباختصار، إن صناعة البتروكيماويات والمنتجات العديدة التي تقوم بصناعتها تلعب دورا حيويا في حياتنا اليومية سواء في المنزل أو المكاتب وحتى عند السفر من مكان إلى آخر.

هل تتصور يوما ينعدم فيه الغازولين أو مستحضرات التجميل أو البلاستيكيات أو المبيدات والأسمدة الزراعية أو المنظفات أو زيوت التشحيم أو الألياف الاصطناعية أو الأسفلت؟  إن كل هذه المنتجات، المستخدمة يوميا، يتم تصنيعها عن طريق خلط المواد البتروكيماوية/الكيماوية المأخوذة من مصادر الوقود المتحجرة كما سنشرحها من سلسلة المقالات التالية.

Series Two: The Seven Pillars of Petrochemicals – Part II In the previous series part I, we briefly discussed about the basic building bocks of petrochemicals (The Seven Pillars). In this second part, world’s major petrochemical manufacturers and uses as well as applications of petrochemicals/chemicals products will be discussed in some details. Manufacturing Companies Probably one of the oldest pioneers of the petrochemical industry is the Union Carbide Corporation, a subsidiary of the Dow Chemical Company. It was in 1920 when the company first developed a cost-effective method of producing ethylene. Union Carbide Company produces chemicals and polymers used for products such as industrial and food packaging, household products, paints and coatings, pharmaceuticals, wire and cable, personal care, automotive, textiles, agriculture, and others.

Below table lists some of world’s major companies that manufacture petrochemicals.

Uses and Applications of Petrochemicals/Chemicals Products The petrochemical manufacturing industry can be classified based the end-use of its products which are categorized into the following application areas: • Agricultural chemicals • Adhesives • Paint and coatings • Hygienic solutions preparations (soap, cleaning compounds, and toiletries) • Pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing

The synthetic materials group encompasses a variety of raw materials and finished products. These include plastic materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene, polystyrene, and polypropylene. These synthetic products serve a vital role in the manufacturing chain as they are the building blocks for such varied items like children’s toys, television and stereo speakers, public address systems, electronics, conduits, electrical and water pipes, beverage and water bottles. The auto manufacturing industry is also one of the major users of these categories of plastic products.

On the other hand, the agricultural sector of the petrochemical manufacturing industry supplies farmers and domestic gardeners worldwide with their requirements in terms of plant fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other farming and agricultural chemicals.

Another equally important sector of the petrochemical industry is the paint, coating, and adhesive products sector wherein manufacturers responsible for the manufacture of paints, putties, varnishes, paint removers, adhesives, glues, sealers, and caulking used by the construction, transportation and woodworking industries make use of the wide variety of raw materials supplied by the petrochemical industry.

Ubiquitous everyday bath and laundry soaps, laundry detergents, as well as other cleaning compounds found in homes, offices and hotels would not exist if it was not for the petrochemical industry. These items also comprise the wide variety of cosmetics and toiletries, including perfumes, body lotions and toothpastes. The personal hygiene products generated have become an integral part of every household and business throughout the world.

In table given below, some of the various applications and uses of petrochemical products are broadly enumerated to give an idea of how pervasive and valuable petrochemical-derived products are in our daily lives.

Summary In short, the petrochemical industry and the numerous products it manufactures play a very significant role in our lives – at home, in the office and even while traveling from one place to another.

Imagine a day wherein there is no gasoline, cosmetics, plastics, agricultural pesticides and fertilizers, laundry detergents, lubricating oil, man-made and other types of synthetic fabrics, and asphalt. All of these everyday products are manufactured by combining petrochemicals/chemicals derived primarily from fossil fuels as you will see in the next series of articles
